In the summer of 2024, weary of London’s relentless capitalism, I fled to an artist-in-residence village in the mountains of Armenia in search of refuge. Apparently, many Russian and Iranian artists who had escaped political turmoil once lived there together. But when I arrived, the place was empty. On the wall of an abandoned building, a poem was written in Russian: “Everything ruffles its feathers, everything blooms, everything sings of love.” Traces of the artists lingered throughout the building, while the corridor was dotted with the still bodies of a few dead swallows.
