2022 · Junk bicycle, aluminium, dynamo generator, small light bulb, industrial fan · Shown in Denryoku-ten (Electric Power Exhibition), two-person exhibition with Takao Yamada, Akasaka Seto Building, Tokyo
This work, titled Power Generating, is an installation that transforms any location or space into a power station. The device consumes around 100 to 200 watts of electricity while generating only between 1 watt and less than a few watts, just enough to dimly light a bulb.
Dams steal water from fish, solar panels steal land from wild animals, then what would wind turbines steal from nature?
I created this piece to express the surreal contradictions in modern civilisation, such as the wasteful usage of scarce natural resources and environmental damage caused by renewable energy. The work focuses on these absurdities by intentionally wasting a large amount of resources and electricity.
Specifications: power consumption 124 W / 178 W (50/60 Hz) · generated power less than 1 W (DC) · H 2500 mm, W 2000 mm
Usage instructions: set the industrial fan within one to two metres of the generator (wind turbine), and direct the airflow from the fan towards the generator.
