The title of this work, “The Green Ray,” carries a sense of irony: it is meant to express a beam of “green” rather than simply a green light. This piece explores the future of plant photosynthesis and the future relationship between humans and plants. Back in 2017, in Japan, vast abandoned farmlands and remote mountainous areas were being covered by solar panels, while old factories in the suburbs were being transformed into plant factories. Electricity generated by solar panels, which take sunlight away from plants, is used to illuminate plant factories with pink lights to cultivate vegetables. In the future, more and more plants will likely be grown in factories under pink lights, and the energy for these lights may come from what is taken away from other plants. I see this future as an inevitable dystopian landscape, and created this work as a prediction of that grim future.
