The inspiration for this work came when I saw several drainage pipes lined up at regular intervals along the side of a concrete bridge in Tokyo. These pipes were likely designed to drain rainwater that had absorbed into the bridge. Normally, they would be a common, unremarkable feature of concrete infrastructure. However, this time I was astonished by the ecosystem developing around the pipes. Each of the drainage pipes, even though they were adjacent to one another, seemed to belong to an entirely different natural environment. I couldn’t help but be thrilled, as though great rivers like the Tarim or the Tigris were flowing through Tokyo’s concrete jungle. To honour this discovery, I envisioned two of the pipes, each with its particularly striking ecosystem, as these mighty rivers, and expressed my respect for nature by enlarging the photographs far beyond the pipes’ actual size.
